Metastatic Spinal Cord Compression

چکیده
According to recent Canadian statistics, an estimated 186,400 new cases of cancer and 75,700 deaths from cancer are expected in Canada in 20121. In general, between 40% and 70% of patients with advanced solid tumours such as those of breast, prostate, and lung will develop bone metastases2. The spine is the most common site for bone metastasis, affecting up to 30% of cancer patients3. Overall, between 5% and 10% of cancer patients will develop metastatic spinal cord compression (mscc), an oncologic emergency requiring early diagnosis and immediate treatment4,5. Spinal cord damage including vascular injury, hemorrhage, white matter edema, and nerve damage such as demyelination and axonal damage, are frequently observed at the site of compression and cause symptoms such as back pain and motor or sensory deficits6–9. The main objectives of mscc treatment are preservation or improvement of neurologic function (particularly walking capacity), pain relief, and preservation or improvement of quality of life7. The most-used treatment modalities are corticotherapy, radiotherapy, and surgery. ABSTRACT

This presentation analyses the histological types, relative incidences, age, sex and anatomical distributions of one hundred and seventy-nine biopsy proven tumors of the spinal canal from a general hospital in Iran. Particular attention is paid to differences in the relative incidence of these tumors compared with that in various published reports and the statistics from several eastern co...

Aim: To know the demographics of the patients most commonly involved by metastatic cord compression in Kashmir and to find the commonest primary organ to metastasize to spine causing cord compression. Methods: A hospital-based 10-year retro-prospective study was carried out in the Department of Neurosurgery of Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences, Soura from July 2002 to June 2012, whic...
متن کاملThe surgical management of metastatic epidural compression of the spinal cord.
Metastatic epidural compression of the spinal cord is a significant source of morbidity in patients with systemic cancer. With improved oncological treatment, survival in these patients is improving and metastatic cord compression is encountered increasingly often. The treatment is mostly palliative. Surgical management involves early circumferential decompression of the cord with concomitant s...
متن کاملFocus On The surgical management of metastatic spinal cord compression
Introduction Metastatic spinal cord compression (MSCC) is defined as the compression of the dural sac and its contents by an extradural tumour mass.1 Improved oncological outcomes2 have resulted in more frequent presentation of MSCC.3 Autopsy data demonstrate spinal metastases in 70% of the commonest cancers and an the incidence of symptomatic MSCC in up to 10%.4 Successful treatment achieves m...
متن کاملNew developments in the surgical management of spinal cord compression caused by metastatic tumor.
Metastatic Epidural Spinal Cord Compression (MESCC) occurs when cancer metastasizes to the spine and then secondarily compresses the spinal cord. MESCC occurs in 10 to 20% of patients with lung cancer (5), and it has been estimated that there are over 20,000 new cases each year in the United States (2). If left untreated, virtually 100% of these patients would become paraplegic. Even with the c...
